Chasing the Glory

A While Between Drinks…

Glory Chasers. It has been a while between drinks.
As we all head towards a new year in Aussie sport, Chasing the Glory will be expanding its stratoshpere.
Of course, Heavens game of Rugby Union stays firmly in the mix. With Super 15 approaching, Matty & Patty are licking their lips in Glory-licious anticipation.
But, a few other pots have been boiling of late…the boys have been running around brewing up a keen involvement in Glory Chasing (as well as overstaying their welcome) across a few more prominent sports within this great brown land.

More on that later this week…

But first – something needs to be written and shared about this current Ashes campaign. It’s truly unescapable – not especially seeing all the poms toasting themselves in sun and absolutely loving the re-emergence of malicious English cricketing.

Today’s lesson is about building character. No matter what industry or profession you oblige yourself in, it is imperative that you have a strong character, not only to keep yourself motivated and sane but to emit positive vibrations to the people around you. Vibrations that show that you enjoy whatever it is that you do in life. For sporting teams and their star players, building character is a cornerstone to any success on and off the field. In the wide world of sport (you’re welcome channel 9) all sporting players and teams at some point will come under fire from the media, their supporters and the governing bodies. They also have to find a way to mentally survive the tough defeats and keep the ego at bay for the successes. These are all extremely important aspects of a player’s life if they choose to enter the professional sporting realm. Pressures that You and I could not even fathom as we are viewers and fans for purely entertainment purposes. What carries the player’s through these difficult crossroads throughout their sporting careers? Strength in character and support from their teammates.

One only has to look as far as Australia’s shaky Ashes display to see the perfect example of a strong character. That man is Ricky Ponting. Whatever your selection preference may be he is an example of a mentally strong individual with a solid support base. Despite some actions on the field not replicating the above statement we here at CTG look to the conference room for our inspiration. The man is scrutinized on a daily basis by the media and public, it is his ability to respond to this scrutiny in a manner that commands attention and support. He is a well prepared captain with an answer to every question on occasions leaving reporters speechless. It is Ponting’s aptitude to deflect the pressure and maintain a positive outlook that defines his strong character as a captain. These are traits that Cricket Australia will surely be resonating in the dressing rooms of their ever-changing Ashes squad over the coming weeks.

Feel free to join the discussion by leaving us a note and keep Chasing that Glory.

Episode #2. Season send-off.

For the final segment of the Super 14 season, Matty & Patty are still stuck in Reds camp at Ballymore. This week, prior to the Highlanders clash, they have roped in Captain Will Genia, and young stalwart Hooker James Hanson, for some wit and a little conversation, as well as a tour of the Queensland training facilities.

What a season it has been for the Queensland Reds. The players, staff and administration have toiled, hurt, won and then lost, but can now stand tall – yes, they probably won’t make it into the remaining 4 teams and to a semi-final playoff and yes, the trophy cabinet will still remain empty this season…but in Matty & Patty’s minds, the Reds should definitely enlist the cleaning team to find the keys, open that cabinet and get in there to remove the dust…because Glory ain’t far away. This team, no, this juggernaut, have all epitomised the Chase for Glory this year – and as a result, they have brought Rugby back to the corporate corridors & school tuckshops of Queensland. After Saturday night, Matty & Patty, like the rest of Queensland, will wait impatiently for the return of the Reds in 2011…

Matty & Patty in Cardiff – Match Review

Australia 33 defeated Wales 12.

Cold and windy Wales, but a match inside a fully enclosed Millenium Stadium. Two teams known for their running rugby – one team an undisputed favourite, their opponents determined to redeem themselves and send out a message to the critics. The stage was set. An eighty minute storybook performance followed, and finally, what everyone was waiting for – a clinically brilliant performance by the Wallabies. A fitting climax for the Wallabies (and Chasing the Glory) to end their respective tours. Check out Matty & Patty’s review on the match and Leave a Note with your thoughts.

Stay tuned to Chasing the Glory this week for a final video of the boys Outtakes from Cardiff and a farewell message to end Chasing the Glory for 2009!
